Trading & Economy

16 January 2026
Author: Boltkill

The Boltkill SMP features a robust player-driven economy. By using our Sign Shop system, you can trade resources, gear, and items with other players even when you are offline. This system is completely secure and prevents any chance of "trade-scamming" or griefing.

How to Create a Shop Sign

Setting up a shop is a simple two-step process: place a sign, then fill in the sign with text to "program" it.

Selling Items

When setting up a sign to sell items you want to follow this template. Once the sign is setup, the items will be taken out of your inventory and put into the sign for storage. If you break the sign, the items are returned.

Line 1: [Trade]
Line 2: <Price>
Line 3: <#OfItems> <ItemName>:<Stock>

In the example above, we are selling 1 stick for $5 each, with a total stock of 1 stick.

Buying Items

When setting up a sign to buy items you want to follow this template. Once the sign is setup, the money will be taken out of your balance and put into the sign for storage. If you break the sign, the money is returned.

Line 1: [Trade]
Line 2: <#OfItems> <ItemName>
Line 3: <Price>:<Stock>

In the example above, we are buying 1 stick for $5 each, with a max purchase quantity of 5.

USEFUL Economy Commands

To manage your wealth and set up your shops correctly, you’ll need these utility commands:

Balance: /bal - Check your current bank balance.
Item Names: /itemdb - Hold an item and type this to see its technical name (required for shop commands).
Instant Sell:/sell [item] - Instantly sell items from your inventory to the server (available for ores and farmable items).

Using /itemdb to find the correct name for a complex item, if you can't find a short enough name, let a admin know to create a new one.

Tips for Success

Location Matters: Setting up a shop near a busy landmark will get you more customers, if you've put in alot of work on your shop, ask a admin to setup a warp for you.
Clear Labeling: While the sign updates with the price, using nearby item frames or decorative blocks helps players find what they need quickly.
Stock: If you find it hard to keep up with stock of item your selling, consider adding a buy sign for ingredients. For example buying cobble stone and selling smooth stone.

Happy trading,
Boltkill
